Copywriting for Lawyers: 5 Secrets to Win More Clients

Copywriting for lawyers sounds like it should be the easiest gig on the planet. As a lawyer, you write all day. You can draft a motion before your coffee gets cold and make a demand letter sound downright menacing. So why does the “About Us” page on your firm’s website make you want to crawl under your desk?

This is because copywriting and legal writing aren’t the same thing. Legal writing must be airtight. It anticipates every counterargument and leaves zero wiggle room. Website copy has a totally different job: getting a stressed-out stranger to trust you with their legal issue, which is often complex and incredibly personal.

You want a law firm website that looks smart and professional, and you also want it to bring in more clients. Here’s everything you need to know about writing great copy that makes a difference.

Why Is Copywriting for Lawyers Important?

Your legal skills win cases, but it’s your website that decides whether you get the chance to take them on.

Your website makes the first impression

Before anyone books a consultation, they Google you, and they also Google your competitors. Your website is the first “meeting” potential clients have with your firm, and they’re using it to judge your competence. If your copy sounds stiff or dated, they’ll trust your competitors more.

Your future clients are reading in crisis mode

Nobody hires a lawyer on a great day. They just got rear-ended on the interstate, or they’re holding divorce papers they didn’t see coming. They’re anxious and scrolling on their phone at 11 p.m. Copy that speaks plainly and calmly tells them they found the right person (you!).

Most law firm websites sound exactly the same

Pull up ten firm websites in any city and count how many times you see “decades of combined experience” on their pages. We’ll wait. When every firm uses the same phrases, clients can’t tell anyone apart, so they just go with whoever answers first or charges the least. Strong copy gives them a reason to pick you.

Your website helps with local SEO

People search for things like “car accident lawyer near me” or “personal injury lawyer in Chicago” to find a lawyer when they’re in need. If your copy doesn’t use the words they type, Google has no clue you exist for those searches.

Legal is one of the most competitive industries in search, so it’s important to optimize every single page of your website.

Copywriting for Lawyers: 5 Tips to Get More Clients From Your Website

1. Write for your client

Clients want to understand what’s happening to them, and most of them don’t have a legal background. Avoid industry jargon and swap terms like “tortfeasor” for plain language like “the driver who hit you.”

Plain language has nothing to do with your clients’ intelligence. A surgeon who just got T-boned wants plain English as much as anyone, because stress shrinks everybody’s patience for jargon.

Make it easy to understand who you are, what you do, and why your potential clients should trust you.

2. Lead with your client’s problem

A visitor’s first question is “Can you help with my problem?” so answer that one first on your home and services pages. Instead of “Smith & Associates: Over 40 Years of Legal Excellence,” try something like “Hurt in a Crash? Talk to a Lawyer Who Picks Up the Phone.”

Your credentials then back up the promise further down the page.

3. Let your firm’s personality come through

People hire people. When someone trusts you with their injury claim or their custody case, they want you to have credentials and experience, but they also want to know who you are as a person.

Your website, and especially your About Page, is a great opportunity to tell them why you went into law and how you treat the people you represent.

For example, maybe you’re a family-run firm, or a former prosecutor who switched sides. These details are your competitive edge, and warmth won’t make you look less capable. It makes you memorable.

4. Build trust without promising outcomes

You obviously can’t write “We’ll win your case” or promise a “guaranteed settlement,” but you can promise a certain experience of working with you and showcase your credentials in the right places.

Here’s how you can do that:

  • Walk clients through your process and what happens after they get in touch with you
  • Tell them how quickly you return calls and who they’ll be talking to day to day
  • List your bar admissions, certifications, and awards on your attorney bio pages

At the same time, resist the urge to stack every credential you’ve ever earned at the top of your homepage. Credentials are received better when they’re woven into the bigger story of your firm.

5. Don’t forget about SEO

SEO, or search engine optimization, is how you help Google understand what your website is about so it can show your pages to people searching for a lawyer like you.

These days, good SEO also means good AI search. More and more people skip Google and ask tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overviews something like “Who’s a good divorce lawyer in Denver?” These tools pull their answers from websites that are clearly organized and clearly written, so the work you put into SEO helps you get recommended in both places.

One of the most important pieces of SEO is a clear website structure. Your homepage should give a broad overview of your firm, each practice area should get its own dedicated page, and if you serve several cities, separate location pages help you rank in them.

There are many other important tips and tricks for SEO, and a knowledgeable copywriter can walk you through building your SEO strategy and doing keyword research.

Copywriting for Personal Injury Lawyers Example

Donchez Law Firm as an example of copywriting for lawyers.

Donchez Law is a family-run personal injury firm led by Jeffrey J. Donchez and Mercedes M. Donchez, a father-daughter attorney team.

The Challenge

Donchez Law offers the kind of personal attention you only get from a family firm, but their old website didn’t say so. In their words, the copy sounded boring, unprofessional, and like it was written in the 90s. Nothing on the page explained why someone should choose them over the bigger firms in the area.

Jeffrey and Mercedes wanted copy that felt warm and inviting while still sounding like they could handle any case that came their way. They also wanted a strong SEO focus to bring more traffic and more bookings.

Our Approach

The father-daughter story became the heart of the messaging. Big personal injury firms can buy billboards, but they can’t offer a family that treats every client like a neighbor.

We balanced that warmth with confident, capable language so visitors would feel cared for and well represented at the same time. Personal injury keywords were also an intentional part of the copy.

The Results

Within just one month of launching the new website, Donchez Law started ranking for personal injury attorney keywords on Google, and it’s kept climbing since.

Mercedes shared that she’d been nervous about hiring a copywriter because her field felt so technical. After reading the finished copy, she said it felt like we knew exactly what she wanted to say!

FAQs

What does a copywriter for lawyers do?

A copywriter for lawyers writes the words on your website and marketing materials, such as blog posts. They help you explain what you do in plain language, build trust with potential clients, and get your firm ranking on Google for the searches your clients make.

Does law firm website copy have to follow advertising rules?

In most states, yes. Law firm websites generally count as attorney advertising under state bar rules, many of which are based on the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. Those rules typically cover misleading claims, testimonials, past results, and specialization language.

Should my law firm website sound formal or conversational?

Somewhere in between usually works best. You want enough polish that clients trust you with serious matters, but also enough warmth that you sound like a person they’d want to talk to. Often, the right balance ultimately depends on your practice area. For example, a personal injury or family law site can be a bit warmer, but a corporate or IP firm might keep things a touch more buttoned-up.

What pages does a law firm website need?

At minimum, you’ll want a homepage, an about page with attorney bios, a separate page for each practice area, and a contact page to get in touch with you. If you serve multiple cities, location pages can help you rank in each area. A blog helps too, since it gives you room to answer common client questions and target more search terms over time.
